The investigation of measurement & evaluation parts in the new elementary school mathematics curriculum (case of Afyonkarahisar)

The purpose of this current study was to find out the preferences of in-serviceelementary school teachers in using the assessment tools, such as portfolyo, conceptmaps, projects, rubric, peer-assessment, self-assessment and so forth, and theirknowledge about these assessment tools in the new elementary school mathematicscurriculum. There were a total of 200 in-service elementary school teachers involved inthe study that took place in Afyonkarahisar during 2006-2007. The researcherdeveloped a questionnaire, ÖÖDT, consisting of three parts showing names of all sortsof the assessments tools on which the teachers order the tools by their preferences withregard to the use of them and having knowledge. Moreover, the researcher conducted30-minute semi-structured interviews with four in-service teachers chosen purposefullyin order to support the findings of the study. After the collection of the data, theresearcher used descriptive statistics in the analysis of the quantitative data andanalyzed the qualitative data by classifying and coding. The study showed that most ofthe in-service elementary school teachers did not have adequate knowledge about thenew assessment tools. Therefore, they stated that they were unable to use all assessmenttools in the new reform-based elementary school mathematics curriculum. Moreover,they claimed that they did not take sufficient training about the use of new assessmenttools in the new program and lack of resources limited their preferences in the selectionof the assessment tools.
