Tobacco use, alcohol use and alcohol use disorder prevalence and technology addiction levels in earthquake victims aged 20 and above who came to Trabzon after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş center earthquakes

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of tobacco product, alcoholic beverage use, alcohol use disorder, technology (smartphone, digital gaming, and social media) addiction levels before the earthquake, and how their use changed after coming to Trabzon due to the earthquake in earthquake victims aged 20 and over who came to Trabzon after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes. Material and Method: In the cross-sectional study, 862 individuals were included in the analysis. The dependent variables were tobacco product, alcoholic beverage, smartphone, digital game playing and social media use before the earthquake, alcohol use disorder, smartphone addiction, social media addiction, internet game playing disorder and changes in their use after coming to Trabzon. Chi-square test, McNemar test, Wilcoxon test and binary logistic regression tests were used in statistical analysis. Results: The prevalence of tobacco use before the earthquake and after coming to Trabzon were 27.0%; 28.7%, alcoholic beverages 9.5%; 7.6%, smartphones 95.2%; 95.1%, social media 83.8%; 83.6% and digital games 27.5%; 27.4%, respectively. After coming to Trabzon, the frequency of cigarette use increased for 39.2% and the amount of use increased for 44.6%. Among those who smoked rolled cigarettes, 52.5% started smoking after coming to Trabzon, 13.8% increased the frequency of use and 66.3% increased the amount of use. Among those who used alcoholic beverages, 45.2% decreased their use. The frequency of use increased for 38.1% of smartphone users, 30.7% of social media users and 46.8% of digital game players. Conclusion: After coming to Trabzon, the prevalence, amount and frequency of tobacco product use increased; the prevalence, amount and frequency of alcoholic beverage use decreased; the frequency of smartphone and social media use and the frequency of playing digital games increased.
