Investigation of the reflection of the root values in the 2023 social students curriculum program on the pictures and texts in social studies course books

This master's thesis represents a research that adopts the document analysis method in order to analyze the root values in social studies education. The main goal of the research is to comprehensively examine the written and visual documents in social studies textbooks used in Turkey to what extent they reflect root values such as patience, respect, responsibility, self-control, justice, friendship, patriotism, helpfulness, love and honesty. The research process focuses on a detailed application of the document analysis method. In this context, the texts and visual elements in social studies textbooks were evaluated through document analysis, and how the determined root values were represented through these documents was systematically revealed. As a result of the document analysis, it was seen that root values were mentioned in 70% of Social Studies textbooks. The root values of patriotism, responsibility, and respect account for 63.3% of all values; the root values of justice, self-control, and helpfulness constituted 25.5% of all values, and the root values of love, honesty, friendship, and patience constituted 11.2% of all values. Therefore, it has been determined that root values are mentioned extensively in social studies textbooks, but some values are given more space than others. It was found that the most mentioned root value was patriotism (25.2%), while the least mentioned root value was patience (1.2%) among the values in the social studies textbooks.
