The role of local governments in the 2030 sustainable development goals: The case of Çorum municipality

This study examines the implementation of the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local government level, using the case of Çorum Municipality. The SDGs constitute a global call to action aimed at eradicating poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring peace and prosperity for all people. Local governments are widely recognized as playing a critical role in the achievement of these goals. Drawing on literature review and field research methods, the study offers a comprehensive evaluation of the historical development and scope of the concept of sustainable development, as well as the roles and responsibilities undertaken by local governments—particularly municipalities—in line with the SDGs. The original contribution of this research lies in its systematic analysis of the projects, practices, and challenges faced by Çorum Municipality in the process of implementing the SDGs. The findings indicate that the municipality's efforts have primarily concentrated on areas such as sustainable cities, clean water and sanitation, and renewable energy. However, the study also reveals that these efforts are constrained by several structural challenges, including limited financial resources, lack of technical capacity, and coordination problems among institutions. In this context, the study aims to provide policy recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of local governments in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
