Abstract (EN)

Shar'ia records occupy an exceptionally important place in historical investigations of regional and town history. Also, 244 numbered Mardin Shar'ia Record, the subject of our thesis, is a very crucial source conveying us the regional, provincial, cultural, social and economic structure of the town today in a detailed way. Mardin has a cosmopolitan structure in term of socio-cultural aspects. With this peculiarity, it reflects the general characteristics of social structure of Ottoman State. The Muslim population density in rural area of Mardin is high. However, it is observed that the non-Muslim population density is higher than that of rural area. In general, Muslims have mostly dealt with economic activities such as agriculture, horticulture and animal breeding, while non-Muslims have mainly dealt with the activities that are active in the city centres; for example art and trade. In this study, it is tried to reflect the districts of the town centre, its provincial towns and its villages, its social structure, its economic activities and also names of people widely used during the period; and the religious groups living in city, town and villages and the relations between them.
