Transcription and comparative evaluotian of muslim and nonmuslim Harput Subprovince Arabgir District's population book numbered 2587-2588 (H.1247/m.1832)

Civil services carried out in the Ottoman which had the characteristics of an empire has an historical adventure from ongoing from the past to today. Since the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, censuses were made and various records were kept to recruit soldiers and collect taxes. Civil services in the modern sense started in the Ottoman with the establishment of Ministries of Registration to carry out these services in the Districts and Ministry of Civil Registry within Ministry of Internal Affairs after the population census of 1831. After the first general population census made in 1831, regional and general population censuses were made in various dates such as 1844, 1852, 1856, 1866, 1881, 1882 and 1905, and care was taken to keep the records up-to-date. Social, political and economic history of Ottoman State in 19th Century was mostly defined by population and population movements. Civil registers carry a great importance in terms of revealing administrative structure, number of male population and military service statuses, tax payers, birth and death dates, used names and nicknames by means of providing neighborhood and village names regarding where they are kept. Registers of Muslims and non-Muslims for Harput District Arabgir Township numbered 02587 and 02588, which contains these information, includes population statistics dated hegira 1247 and Gregorian 1832. The information in the registry are classified as tables under the titles such as population, age, nickname, profession, change of address, tax, physical disabilities. Many results were obtained about the demographical, economic and social structure of the period.
