Abstract (EN)

This academic thesis examines the methodological and analytical study of Imam Abu Ja'far Ibn Jarir Al-Tabari's (d. 310 AH) approach to Islamic creed, based on his book "Al-Basir fi Ma'alim Al-Din" (Insight into Religious Landmarks). The study holds significant importance due to Al-Tabari's prestigious scholarly position in Islamic heritage and his pivotal role in establishing and determining Islamic creed according to Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama'ah methodology. The thesis is divided into three main chapters, preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. The first chapter reviews the historical and academic context of Imam Al-Tabari's life, highlighting the political, social, and intellectual conditions that influenced his scholarly personality. It also provides an overview of his personal life, academic journeys, and works. The second chapter introduces the book "Al-Basir fi Ma'alim Al-Din," explaining its importance and position among Al-Tabari's works, and clarifying his methodology in authorship and his approach to presenting doctrinal issues. This chapter also examines the sources Al-Tabari relied upon in establishing creed, namely the Holy Quran, Prophetic Sunnah, and consensus, along with his methodology in using each source. It focuses on studying Al-Tabari's approach to establishing matters of creed, highlighting the principles and fundamentals he followed, including: veneration of religious texts and submission to them, combining textual and rational evidence, maintaining moderation in establishing creed, and responding to doubts and innovations with evidence and proof. The third chapter is dedicated to an analytical study of the doctrinal issues addressed by Al-Tabari in his book, such as matters of faith, divine decree, divine names, and attributes, explaining his methodology in presenting, discussing, and proving them. The study concluded with several findings, most notably: Al-Tabari's methodology was characterized by authenticity and comprehensiveness, combining sound transmission and proper rational consideration, adherence to the righteous predecessors' methodology in understanding and establishing religious texts, relying on textual evidence from the Quran and Sunnah as a foundation for establishing creed, while utilizing both rational and logical evidence, and distinguished by moderation in establishing matters of creed, particularly regarding divine names, attributes, and human actions, and his attention to refuting groups that opposed Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama'ah's creed, using both transmitted and rational arguments.
