Cinematic design of audience interaction in 360 degree VR contents

Abstract (EN)

Through the application of science and technology, Virtual Reality (VR) has the potential to add new approaches and applications to the ever-changing style of cinema. VR, along with other technical innovations introduced to the production processes of cinema necessitate some reconsideration pertaining to the structural elements that traditional cinema has developed and used up to now, and heralds a distinctly new form of cinema. The aim of this study is to deal with the changing cinematic structure related to the use of of 360° VR, and to examine how the resulting cinematic design shapes audience interaction. Six contents, one of which was applied by the author of the study, were selected from 360° VR content, the focus of the research was analyzed under the categories "Cinematic Style Oriented" and "Visual Design Oriented". In the two-stage category created for structural analysis, regardless of the narrative structure, the film production processes, including cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing and sound elements, were dealt with in unison with 360° VR technology; and the use of visual design elements which served to direct audience's attention were analyzed. As a result of this examination, it has been determined that 360° VR technology, with the stylistic innovations on offer, and potential for visual design, has a cinematic design power that, whilst accompanied by the structural elements of traditional cinema, both shapes and layers audience interaction.
