An investigation of proverbs in the 5th grade Turkish coursebook in terms of values education

This study has been conducted to determine the proverbs reflecting values in the 5th grade MoNE (Turkish Education Ministry) Turkish coursebook designed on the basis of the new curriculum , to identify the appearance of the proverbs related to basic values and to investigate the activities in the book in terms of proverbs and values. Based on the values determined by MoNE ,a research has been carried out on Ömer Asım Aksoy's Proverb Dictionary and 10 proverbs have been identifed about the basic values; justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, love, responsibility, patriotism and helpfulness. When the proverb dictionary has been examined, 552 proverbs reflecting these values have been found. As opposed to the other studies carried out on the values education, in this study proverbs have been classified according to the basic values determined in 2017 and the appearance of values in the 5th grade Turkish coursebook used in 2017-2018 education year has been examined. The activities taking place in the book have been investigated in terms of proverbs and values. In this study, the 5th grade Turkish coursebook has been examined in terms of proverbs expressing values. As a result of the study, 27 proverbs have been encountered in the book.18 of these proverbs are related to 10 basic values. The rest of 9 proverbs reflect different values. At the same time, the activities of the book has been looked through in terms of proverbs and values. In relation to the investigations and findings of the study, it can be said that using proverbs in values education is a good technique.
