The effect of jigsaw technique on student success in teaching the subject of sensory organs for the 6th grade

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to examine the effect of the Jigsaw technique on learning in the teaching of the subject of Sensory Organs in the 6th grade Science course of middle school and the lesson process carried out with the Jigsaw technique in terms of student opinions. The explanatory mixed research design, one of the mixed method research designs, was used in the research. The study group consists of 51 students studying in the 6th grade of a middle school located in Bayburt Center in the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. Sensory Organs Achievement Test (DOBT) and semi-structured Interview Form (GF) were used as data collection tools in the research. Independent samples t-test was used in the analysis of the pretest of DOBT, and Mann-Whitney U Test was used in the analysis of the post-test. Content analysis method was used in the analysis of the data obtained from GF. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained from DOBT, it was determined that jigsaw activities increased the achievement of 6th grade students in the subject of Sensory Organs. From the analysis of the data obtained from GF, it was determined that Jigsaw activities were very popular with the students, that the technique had a strong effect on increasing the success of the students and on ensuring communication and socialization. It was also concluded that the Jigsaw technique provided cooperation and solidarity among the students, and that it was strongly desired to be used in other Science subjects and in courses such as Turkish, Social Studies and English.
