Evaluating the personal narrative skills of typically developing 7-10 year old monolingual Turkish speaking children through global tales-TR

The aim of this study is to provide the Turkish literature with a standardized tool that can be used in personal narrative assessment and to present the assessment results of typically developing (TD) children aged 7-10 years. For this purpose, 80 monolingual Turkish-speaking TD children participated in the study including 20 for each age group (7, 8, 9 and, 10 years). The Turkish-adapted Global TALES-TR protocol was conducted online with the children. The narratives were assessed for microstructure measures using the Turkish Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) program. SPSS 22.0 package program and TURCOSA software were used for statistical analysis. As a result of the analysis, differences were observed in 3 of the 6 microstructure measures between the ages of 7-10 and one between the ages of 8-9. In terms of gender, a significant difference was observed in two measurement parameters only in the 9-year age group, and in one parameter when all participants (n=80) were taken into consideration. The microstructure comparison results indicate that in general, children's 'annoyed/angry' narrative is more detailed and their 'proud' narrative is shorter. The frequency of follow-up prompts use and unanswered questions indicate that the most difficult prompt for children is the 'problem' narrative. Narratives were mostly focused on the topics of family, friends, school and success. The results show that the adapted protocol can be used in personal narrative assessment. In this way, broader information can be obtained in groups such as language disorders also. Reinforcing individuals in this respect will contribute to the intervention process.
