In this study, it was aimed to reveal the perceptions of 7th grade students of middle school about speaking and writing skills through metaphor.Phenomenon science pattern,one of the qualitative research patterns and easily accessible case sampling from purposeful sampling methods were used. This research group consisted of 434 students which are studying in the 7th grade of 6 secondary schools in Siverek‟s distinct center of ġanlıurfa city in 2018-2019 academic year.However, the study continued with 256 students because some students did not produce metaphors, did not give reasons for the metaphors that they produced and gave blank papers 153 of students are female, 103 of students are male.The research data were collected with a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher.In order to understand the thoughts of the 7th grade students participating in the research about their speaking and writing skills,two questions consisted of "Speaking is like...; because... " and " writing is like ... ; because..." were asked to the students in line with their expert opinions. The data obtained in the study were evaluated by content analysis, which is one of the qualitative data analysis methods.In the conclusion of the research, 512 metaphors about the concept of speaking and writing were produced.Metaphors that are produced by students in the concept of speech are gathered under 17 different categories considering their common features.In the concept of writing, the metaphors produced by the students were gathered under 21 different categories considering their common characteristics.As a result of the research, while students call speech more as communication and need, they describe writing as a relief tool used in the transfer of emotions and thoughts.When we look at the results of the research as a whole, it was determined that the students had positive perceptions about the concept of speaking and writing.
