Examination of 7th grade Turkish textbooks in terms of vocational existence

Turkish course, which is based on mother tongue education, is a skill-based course rather than knowledge. These skills are reading and listening in the area of comprehension; covers speaking and writing in the field of narration. The effective use of these skills and the development of mother tongue education largely depend on the vocabulary acquired by the student. Since the most important material of formal education is textbooks, the vocabulary that the curriculum envisages to gain students is realized with these tools. For this reason, textbooks, which are an effective tool in gaining vocabulary, should be carefully considered. In this study, the books of MEB Publications and owned by a private publishing house Publications, which are recommended to be taught in 7th grades in the 2021/2022 academic year by the Board of Education, were examined in terms of vocabulary. In this study, which used qualitative research method, document analysis was applied. The words of a total of 80 texts in these two books were subjected to content analysis with the Cibakaya Index Program. It is thought that this study, which is thought to determine the vocabulary of 7th grade Turkish textbooks, will be a guide for textbook authors and publishing houses. The research consists of five parts. In the first part, the summary, purpose, method, work and process steps of the study are given. In the second part, conceptual framework and similar studies are given. In the third part, the method is discussed and the fourth part is the findings. In the last part, there are conclusion, discussion and suggestion. As a result of the study, it has been determined that the books belonging to MEB Publications and owned by a private publishing house are insufficient in terms of vocabulary, variety of vocabulary, and the number of vocabulary elements. According to the data obtained, it was determined that the total vocabulary and vocabulary elements in the two books examined were less compared to the general books. It is thought that the suggestions in the fifth part of the study will contribute to the Turkish literature. Key words: vocabulary, textbook, text, word, concept, frequency, Turkish education.
