Analysis of Tokat Sharia registry no.8

The Ottoman Empire, as it is known, dominated three continents and ruled these continents for centuries. Such an important empire is a matter of military, political, social and economic curiosity and has been the subject of research for many researchers. However, since it is very difficult to examine and research a large empire as a whole, regional and urban studies are more popular nowadays. The most important source for urban research is the Sharia Registers. Sharia Registries provide a wide range of information about the city we are researching. It provides information about the political, economic and social life of that city through the document records it contains. In order to contribute to city historiography in particular and the history of the Ottoman Empire in general, we determined the Sharia Register No. 8 of Tokat as the subject of research. The thesis we are considering consists of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction, information about the definition and importance of the Sharia registry and the existing registries of Tokat is given. In the first chapter, there is a detailed introduction of Tokat Sharia Registry number 8, which is the subject of the research. The first part, consisting of 3 titles, is the Tokat sharia registry dated H. 1217-1219/AD 1802-1805, consists of documents in the registry classified according to their subjects, transcribed and then summarized. The second part gives us general information about the historical, geographical and administrative structure of the city of Tokat. In the third part, which constitutes the last part, evaluations were made about Tokat's socio-economic structure and institutions in line with the Sharia registry we examined. In the conclusion part, the general evaluation of the thesis discussed and written is made and concluded. Keywords: Sharia Court Records, Qadi, Divorce, Foundation, Orders of Governor-general.
