Evaluation of the poetry and reading texts in the 8th grade Turkish textbook in terms of cultural items

The aim of this research is to evaluate the extent to which cultural objects are included in poetry and reading texts in the 8th grade Turkish textbook. The poems and reading texts in the 8th grade Turkish textbooks were examined in the direction of Tomalin and Stempleski's (1993) classification for culture. In this study, which is a qualitative research, the data were collected by means of a document review. In the evaluation of the data, from the qualitative analysis techniques, content analysis was used. In poems and reading texts examined by Tomalin and Stempleski (1993) for the cultural classification, the themes related to the product, the thought, the behavior and the codes related to these themes were determined. The obtained data were transformed into tables and sub-explanations were given in detail. In the study, that the codes related to the theme of ethical norms were the fewest and the codes related to the daily life theme were the most was determined. In the theoretical framework of the study; definition and characteristics of culture, definition and characteristics of language, language and culture relation, the definition of cultural elements, the theme of the product in cultural objects, themes that are focused on the idea and behavior (Literature, folklore, art, music, architecture, beliefs, values, ethical norms, tradition), the definition of values and values education, Turkish lesson and its importance, and researches on the subject studied were included. At the end of the research, in poetry texts and reading texts; Codes related to literature, folklore, art, music, architecture, beliefs, values, ethical norms, traditions and customs, customs, clothing, foods, everyday life themes were identified. In the reading texts in the 8th grade Turkish textbook which is examined as research material, it has been determined that cultural texts are found in sufficient level except a few texts. In poetry texts, fewer cultural items were identified than reading texts. As a result, it has been determined that cultural factors and elements in the texts in the 8th grade Turkish textbook which we examined are given place adequately.
