Abstract (EN)
With the demographic shift caused by an aging population and increased life span the incidence of cancer has increased. Rising consciousness, availability of medical resources and therapeutic advances have led to the increment in surveillance period and admissions to emergency room of cancer patients. In this study, we aimed to describe the clinical and demographic features of cancer patients admitted to our emergency department. Cancer patients older than 18 years and without trauma, admitted to Adıyaman University Training and Research Hospital, Department of Emergency Medicine, between 01.09.2015 and 01.09.2016, were included in this prospective study. Clinicodemographic features of these patients were evaluated. Age, sex, complaint at presentation, occupation, cigarette/alcohol consumption, radiotherapy/chemotherapy administration, residing place (Adıyaman/districts/ other cities) of patients were covered. Data were analyzed via Excel file and SPSS 22.0 statistical software (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) was used for all analyses with an alpha level of 5%considered to indicate statistical significance. Descriptive numerical variables were displayed as mean±standart deviation whereas categorical variables were shown as number along with percent in the tables. A total of 155 adult patients with cancer diagnosis were included in the study. There were 76 men (49%) and 79 women (51%). Mean age was 58.55±15.21 with the highest incidence within the 66-75 years. The predominant type was breast carcinoma (n=34,21. 9%), followed by colorectal cancer (n=31,20%), leukemia (n=25,16.1%) and lung carcinoma (n=21,13.5%). Patients with cancer frequently use emergency room for acute complaints. Therefore, phycisions of emergency medicine, need to have the adequate skills, knowledge and experience to deal with these patients. Given the rarity of studies concerning clinicodemographic features of cancer patients in emergency room, further studies will surely make contribution to the literature. Key Words: Cancer, clinic-demographic feature, emergency
