Abstract (EN)

Objective: Inthis retrospective study, it was aimed to investigate the epidemiological examination of pregnant patients who applied to the emergency department of the university hospital with poisoning from Samsun and the surrounding provinces. Materials and Methods: Ninety patients over the age of 18 who applied to the Adult Emergency Service of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine between January 2010 and December 2022 with acute poisoning were included in this study.. The data of the patients were obtained by retrospectively scanning the hospital automation system and archive files. IBM SPSS 24.0 package program was used for data entry and statistical analysis. Results: The mean age of the patients was 24.995.81 years. 82.22% of the patients were married. The most common type of poisoning in pregnant women was suicide at a rate of 74.44%. The single rate in suicide poisonings was significantly higher than in accidental poisonings. Of the patients, 55.56% lived in the city center, 28.89% lived in the district, and 15.55% lived in the village. Suicide poisoning cases were statistically significantly higher in those living in the city center than accidental poisonings. Majority of the patients had high school or below education level. The level of education in suicide-induced poisonings was significantly higher in cases with secondary school or higher education level than in accidental poisonings. When evaluated in terms of socioeconomic level, most of the patients were at low and moderate socioeconomic level. There was no relationship between socioeconomic level and type of poisoning. 58.89% of the pregnant women who applied to the emergency department with acute poisoning did not have a pregnancy request. In cases of suicide-induced poisoning, the absence of pregnancy demand was significantly higher than in cases of accidental poisoning. Pregnant women who applied to the emergency department as a result of poisoning due to suicide were mostly in the first trimester of pregnancy. 35.56% of the admitted patients had a history of psychiatric illness. There was a significant relationship between the type of poisoning and the history of psychiatric illness. Conclusion: There are limited number of studies in the literature on the epidemiology of accidental or suicidal intoxications during pregnancy. Most studies contain limited information as they only include cases from one center. Since our university is a vi regional hospital in the Central Black Sea region, it contributes to the literature especially about this region; however, prospective and multicenter studies are needed to obtain more generalizable results.
