Nursing practice standards for the patients who undergone conscious sedation in emergency department

Porpuse: The purpose of this study was to define nursing practice standards for the patients who undergone conscious sedation in emergency department.Methods: This is a study, the institution and patients with also approval of the corcerned ethics committee. The study sample consist of 61 hospitalized patients who undergone procedural sedation during painfull procedures in emergency deparment at Dokuz Eylül University. Data collected with Patient Information Form and Nursing Practice Standards for the Patients who Undergone Conscious Sedation in Emergency Department Data Form. The data were analyzed using the means and percentiles for patient information, and Kendall?s coefficient of concordance for experts? view.Results: Opinions of 12 experts were obtained and following an analysis, the scores of the experts were found to be consistent wirth each other (Kendall W:0.80, p:0.553). As a results, intravenous access, pulseoximeter monitorization and preparing of sedation drugs were obtained all of patients. 91.8% of patients connected cardiac monitorization; oxigenation prepared for 98.4% of patients, and also noninvasive blood pressure measurement; the suction prepared for 78.7% of patients; an antidote drugs prepared for 77.0% of patients, and the urgent equipments prepared for 75.4% of patients. It was found that concious sedation occured 15?th minute after sedation (RSS: 3.18±0.83), and also decreased of patient systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate and pulses. The levels of oxygen were very nearly before sedation and after sedation. It was found that the 88.5% of patients recieved 4 liter/minute oxygen treatment during concious sedation; while the patient discharge physiological measurements were stabile.Conclusion: It was found that the nurses couldn?t use standards during nursing observing all of patients who undergone concious sedation in emergency department.Keywords: Sedation, concious sedation in emergency deparment, nursing practice standards
