Analysis of the contribution of Adiyaman province to Turkey's exports and GDP in terms of sub-sectors

Foreign trade refers to the mutual purchase and sale of goods and services between countries and is an important part of international competition. A trade surplus occurs when a country exports more than it imports as a result of foreign trade. A trade deficit occurs in the foreign trade balance when the figure of imports exceeds exports. When examining the structure of Turkey's foreign trade, it is seen that the foreign trade balance generally has a deficit. To minimize foreign trade deficits and maintain the foreign trade balance, priority is given to the export of products with high added value. In this context, the fact that the automotive industrial sector is the one with the highest export value among the exported products is one of the important indicators in terms of achieving the goal regarding the balance in foreign trade and increasing competitiveness. When the foreign trade of Adıyaman province, which constitutes the main subject of the study, is examined, it is found that grain-legume products are the leaders of the agricultural sector and clothing, and textile products are the leader in the industrial sector. It is significant to increase the export of chemical products and to target the export of products with high added value in Adıyaman in terms of increasing the contribution of the province to the country's foreign trade. Due to the fact that Adıyaman is a small city compared to neighboring provinces, investments may shift to these cities, and this also affects the reduction of Adıyaman's competition with other provinces. When the contribution of TRC1 (Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Kilis) and Adıyaman to Turkey's GDP is analyzed, it has been determined that the contribution is not at the desired level and remains at low rates.
