ABSTRACTTHE INVESTIGATION OF EFFECT OF AEROBIC EXERCISE ON SEDENTARY WOMEN?S BODY COMPOSITION, BASAL METABOLIC RATE, TOTAL OXIDANT AND ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITYThe aim of this study was investigated by the effect of 8 weeks aerobic exercise in sedentary women?s body composition, basal metabolic rate, total oxidant and antioxidant capacity.40 volunteer subjects divided into two groups randomly consist of control group (n=20) that their mean age was 40.30±4.47 years old, and exercise group (n=20) that their mean age is 41.05±3.26 years. While control group weren?t exercised, exercise group were exercised 1 hour a day, for 3 days in a week, for 8 weeks. Body composition, basal metabolic rate (BMR), total oxidant (TOC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) measurements of all subjects had measured before and after the study. Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine whether there was any difference between Exercise and Control Groups in terms of age, height and weight properties. Whether or not normally distributed data were examined with Kolmogorov Smirnov test. According to exercise and control groups change in the pre-test and post-test two way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used for comparison. All statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS program and significance level was based at 0.05.According to post-test measurements in favor of EG significant differences were found in all weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, body fat mass, fat free mass, anthropometric measurements, waist-hip ratio, segmental body composition, skinfold caliper, BMR, TOC and TAC measurements (p<0.05). It was determined that BMI value decreased in exercise group from 29.62±3.78 kg/m2 to 28.47±3.74 kg/m2 and according to pre tests in exercise group % 3.11 decrease was detected and in control group % 0.38 increase was found. In exercise group fat free mass (FFM) value was increased from 50.62±5.41 kg to 51.55±5.95 kg and BMR value increased from 1308±201.8 kcal to 1409 ±218.3 kcal. While TAC value increased in exercise group from 2.10±0.01 ?mol to 2.35±0.06 ?mol, there was no significant difference in control group. While TOC value changed from 5.95±1.41 mmol to 5.64±1.67 mmol in control group, in exercise group value decreased from 6.33±1.23 mmol to 3.48±1.94 mmol and significant change was determined (p<0.05).As a result we can say that aerobic exercise changes body composition parameters in positive direction, increases basal metabolic rate, changes total oxidant and antioxidant capacity in significant direction.Key Words: Sedentary Women, Aerobic Exercise, Body Composition, Basal Metabolic Rate, Total Oxidant Capacity, Total Antioxidant Capacity.
