Evaluation the knowledge level of the medical staff working at Afyon Kocatepe University regarding nosocomial infections

SUMMARY Evaluation the knowledge level of the medical staff working at Afyon Kocatepe University regarding nosocomial infections. Nosocomial infections are considered to be a major problem associated with health services when their high morbidity and mortality rates and the economical aspect due to long treatment process required and extra cost of patient care during this process. As this is a crucial matter, the research was done in a descriptive way to investigate the level of awareness of the medical staff working at Afyon Kocatepe University, Ahmet Necdet Sezer Hospital regarding nosocomial infections. A total number of 100 voluntary nurses and assistant doctors were involved in the research. Study data were collected through the questionnaire of which copy was given in Annex- 1. The questionnaire was made up of items related to the respondents' background and items which aim to reflect their level of knowledge regarding nosocomial reactions. The survey had been made between December 12, 2002 and January 02, 2003 by the researcher and a pollster, an intimate colleague of the researcher. The data collected after the survey was evaluated statistically at SPSS environment. During the statistical analysis of the data, variance analysis, t test and Chi-Square tests were used. Consequently after the evaluation, the respondents' level of knowledge regarding nosocomial infections was found out to be low with an average score of 63.31% obtained Key words: Nosocomial Infections, Level of knowledge, Nursing
