Abstract (EN)

Burnout is frequently seen in the fields of services that is directly serving to the people and the human factor plays an important role at the quality of the service. Experiencing burnout of the academic staff working in universities not only affects academician's personal health, but also negatively affects student's education and services provided to the patients. Also the more the level of burnout increases, job satisfaction and the work engagement rates decreases. These studies are required for the the managers to recognize and assess the situation faced by health workers and to recommend possible solutions. The aim of this study is, to investigate the burnout levels of the academic staff, and to assess the effects of the specific socio-demographic variables at burnout and to investigate the correlations between burnout, work engagement and job satisfaction. This study was performed with a descriptive method. The sample was the 298 academicians working in the Afyon Kocatepe University Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine during the 2014-2015 academic year. The questionnaire forms including the personal information form, Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and the Minnesota Job Satisfaction. Questionnaire were used for delivering the data. The survey forms were given to participants by hand and were collected during the same day. The data analysis was carried out with the SPSS 18.0 program. It was found that the mean scores of the academic staff in our study was 48 personal-work related burnout, 44 client related burnout, 3.4 job satisfaction and 3.2 absorption-vigor, 3.1 dedication-vigor of the work engagement. Burnout was higher, job satisfaction and work engagement were lower in the sample who were research assistants, women, single, young, those who don't have children and study too much time in the work. Also medical faculty academicians had more burnout and less work engagement. Burnout was lower, job satisfaction and work 78 engagement were higer in the administrator academicians. Academicians with cadre issue were seen to have more patient/student related burnout and less absorption-vigor at work. As participants' work engagement and job satisfaction scores increased, the burnout levels was decreased. It was determined as the result of this study that the academic staff's level of burnout differs by the variables of gender, age, marital status, number of children, the field of work, academic title, studying time at work, weekly the frequency of sporting, weekly teaching load, administrative tasks and the cadre issues.
