Evaluate prevalence and risk factors of erectile dysfunction among men over 40 years of age in afyonkarahisar

PURPOSE: To evaluate prevalence and risk factors of erectile dysfunction among men over 40 years of age in Afyonkarahisar. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted through 75 screening region in the period between November 2005 and February 2006. Only one man over 40 years of age from each family was randomly selected depending on population of the region by inhabitant indentification chart (IIC). A total of 625 male were evaluated for the presence of ED and its risk factors such as age, marital status, smoking or alcohol history, average yearly income, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular or chronic obstructive lung disease, BPH, malignancy and medications. ED was assessed by International Index for Erectile Function (IIEF) and total score under 21 was accepted as ED. RESULTS: The distribution of patients for 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and >70 years of age groups was; %37.8, %36.3, %17 and %8, respectively and corresponding rates of ED for particular age groups were 16.9, 37, 65.1 and 82, respectively (p<0.001). Of all, the rate of married, divorced and single participants was, 94.6%, 4.3% and 1.1% and corresponding ED rates were; 35.9%, 42.9% and 74.1%, respectively (p<0.001). ED rates for participants with BMI <25 and >30 were 33.7% and 43.8%, respectively. The rate of active smokers, occasionally smokers, the ones who quitted smoking and who never smoked were 40%, 4.2%, 29.4% and 26.5%, respectively and corresponding ED rates were 44.5%, 50%, 40.7% and 29.4%, respectively (p<0.001). ED was detected in 58% of diabetics and 56.3% of hypertensive patients. CONCLUSIONS: ED prevalence increases parallel to the age in Afyonkarahisar. Besides marital status and smoking habit, comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, COLD and BPH are basic risk factors to determine erectile function.
