Determination of antioxidant capacities, total phenolic contents and essential oil profiles of medical sage (salvia officinalis L.) leaves, grown in Afyonkarahisar and Konya provinces

Abstract (EN)

In this research, the effects of different harvesting locations (Konya and Afyonkarahisar), different harvesting periods (pre-flowering period, flowering period and post-flowering period) and different solvent extraction methods (ethanol, methanol, infusion and decoction process with water) on volatile oil yield and composition, antioxidant activities and total phenolic contents of dried leaves of Salvia officinalis L. were investigated. As a result of the study, a total of 44 essential oil components were determined in dried sage leaves. The major essential oil compounds determined were αThujone (15.33-30.96%), Camphor (8.3-18.48%) and 1,8-Cineole (6.89-16.81%). It was determined that the volatile oil content of dried sage samples varied between 0.6-0.8%. According to the results of DPPH and ABTS analyses, it was observed that the samples belonging to Konya had higher antioxidant activity than the samples belonging to Afyonkarahisar province and also the extraction process with methanol was more effective in terms of antioxidant activity. 2020, ix + 68 pages Keywords: Salvia officinalis L, Medical sage, Essential oil, Phenolic content, Antioxidant activity.
