Importance of network externalities in terms of public finance

Externalities are one of the deviations in the functioning of the market economy. The basic condition for the formation of externality is a secondary effect outside the price mechanism. The network externality occurs when the user value of a network depends on the number of subscribers and users present. As more and more people take advantage of a product or technology, when that product or technology becomes more valuable to users, that product or technology shows network externality. The internet clearly demonstrates this feature. The aim of this study is to investigate the usefulness of the positive effects of social networks in terms of public finance. The survey method was chosen for the research and the questionnaire was applied to social media users online and face to face. As a result of this empirical study, it has been determined that social media users are satisfied with e-government applications and have the perception that the internet is effective in forming people's ideas; that they viewed the internet positively for children and adults in creating tax awareness, that they do not think the internet could be used in the fight against tax evasion, that they saw the internet as a communication tool with the government and that they were not willing to see tax advertisements and public spots on social media.
