Abstract (EN)
This study aims to examine the impact of internalized stigma on social integration among individuals with severe psychiatric disorders, specifically those diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Conducted using a quantitative research design, the study population consisted of 850 patients registered at the Bağcılar Meydan Community Mental Health Center, affiliated with Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Psychiatric Hospital. From this population, a sample of 146 patients was selected. The data collection instruments included a descriptive form, the Community Integration Scale for Adults with Psychiatric Disorders, and the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale. The findings indicate that higher levels of internalized stigma negatively affect individuals' social integration. When demographic variables were analyzed, no significant differences were found with respect to diagnosis, gender, or employment status in relation to internalized stigma and social integration. In contrast, statistically significant differences were identified regarding income and educational level. Specifically, higher levels of education and income were associated with lower internalized stigma and higher social integration. Overall, the results demonstrate a bidirectional relationship between internalized stigma and social integration among individuals with severe psychiatric disorders.
