MUSICAL, LITERAL AND INTELLECTUAL ANALYSIS OF AHMED ADNAN SAYGUN'S YUNUS EMRE ORATORIO

This study was conducted to examine the musical, literary and intellectual aspects of the Yunus Emre Oratorio composed by Ahmed Adnan Saygun (1907-1991), who is considered one of the most important names of the polyphonic Turkish music of the Republican period. The data obtained in the study were collected using the scanning method, literature review and qualitative analysis techniques. The content of the study consists of sections created to examine the musical structure, thematic structure, literary text and intellectual content of the Yunus Emre Oratorio, academic studies conducted on the work and sources reflecting Saygun's understanding of music. In the study, the musical analysis of each section is given based on the structure of the work consisting of three sections, the examination of the motifs, arias and recitatives used in these sections, the analysis of the literary structure of the lyrics and the determinations regarding the relationship of the text with Sufi themes such as love and ecstasy. It is also explained how Saygun selected and interpreted the Yunus Emre poems in the oratorio and how he transferred them to music. It is emphasized that the work is not only a musical work but also a philosophical and cultural narrative. This thesis study reveals how Ahmed Adnan Saygun brought together traditional Sufi thought with modern Western music language through Yunus Emre Oratorio and determines the place and originality of the work in Turkish music history.
