Abstract (EN)

Aim: The objective of this study is to assess the level of knowledge regarding rational drug use among patients seeking care at the Family Medicine clinics of Ordu University. Additionally, the aim is to contribute to the literature by identifying factors that influence knowledge levels. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted between May 30, 2023, and September 30, 2023, involved administering a survey to patients attending the family medicine clinics of Ordu University. The survey, developed through a literature review to identify sociodemographic characteristics and factors influencing the level of knowledge on rational drug use, included the Rational Drug Use Scale. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS V23, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Results: The average age of the participants was 40.67 ± 13.13, with 52.4% being female. Approximately 49.2% of the participants demonstrated knowledge of rational drug use. The mean score on the rational drug use scale was higher in females (p=0.024), those who were single (p<0.001), employed individuals (p<0.001), and those residing in urban centers (p<0.001). Additionally, 98.4% of participants indicated that consulting a doctor is necessary when experiencing unwanted effects while using medication. About 54.5% of the participants believed or were undecided about the potential use of herbal products instead of medication. Conclusion: More than half of the participants lack knowledge of rational drug use. In this regard, it is evident that society needs to be informed about rational drug use. Furthermore, family physicians, as the first point of contact, should assess individuals with a holistic approach; Family physicians should also regularly monitor the treatments and medications they prescribe, providing counseling to their patients on rational drug use.
