Violence against men within the scope of domestic violence: The case of Adıyaman province

Violence is an action that causes physical and psychological harm to individuals. Violence, which is directed against all segments in social life, also harms men at a considerable level, although it is not very visible in the family. Although violence against men is not accepted by the society at first, it appears with various types of violence different from the physical aspect of violence. Unfortunately, many legal and social rights unilaterally granted to women in recent years have overshadowed the violence experienced by men and have not allowed men to defend themselves and have rights as victims of violence. When it comes to domestic violence, it is necessary to see and examine the other side of the coin, which is the part where male individuals are exposed to violence, instead of seeing only the part against women. It has been observed that men are exposed to different types of violence, especially psychological and verbal violence, by their spouses in the family environment. Although it is not well known today, violence is a hidden problem that seriously affects men's lives. It is essential that Law No. 6284 should approach the victimization of the men in question within the framework of fairness by saying that violence has no gender, instead of making gender discrimination as in the phrase "The declaration of the woman is essential". For this reason, men's exposure to violence and the way they define the cause-and-effect relationship of violence are seen as one of the necessary areas to be investigated. According to the findings obtained as a result of this study conducted on 15 male individuals serving in various professions in Adıyaman Province and its districts; it was observed that men were also victimized in the experience of domestic violence. It was found that the types of violence to which men are most intensely exposed are "Psychological and Verbal Violence". In addition, it was concluded that the experience of domestic violence harms not only female individuals but also male individuals.
