Abstract (EN)
The ancient city of Aizanoi, located in the region called Phrygia Epiktetos in antiquity, is today within the borders of Çavdarhisar District of Kütahya Province. This city experienced the most intensive construction activities between the mid-1st century AD and the 3rd century AD. In the ancient period, cities built ostentatious structures in order to have splendor and prestige, to meet social and public needs, and to show their richness in religious and cultural contexts. These activities reflect not only the physical structure of the city but also its cultural, social and economic identity. In this context, ionic style column capitals, which were preferred in public buildings, colonnaded streets, peristyle courtyards and atriums used in antiquity, primarily in temples, have an important place.Within the scope of this thesis, 59 ion column capitals and 9 fragments of ion column capitals found in situ on the buildings in the Ancient City of Aizanoi and unearthed during the excavations in the past years were analysed. After providing information on the forms, decoration styles and dating of the ionic style capitals, all of which date to the Roman Imperial Period; comparisons were made with the column capitals in other cities regarding their similarities and differences. In the last part of the thesis, the catalog and plates section includes photographs and drawings of the ion column capitals in the ancient city of Aizanoi. In this way, the decoration and typology of the capitals in the city will be understood more clearly.
