Attitudes of academicians towards working pregnant women

Women face many problems from the moment they enter working life. The unwritten but established principles of the society affect women's working life in different ways, especially during pregnancy. The aim of this study is to reveal the attitude of academics, who are considered intellectuals and pioneers of development in society, towards working pregnant women. The study was conducted as a descriptive study between February 2022 and December 2022 to determine the attitude of academics working at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) towards working pregnant women. Of the 2411 academicians in the population, 340 people who participated in the study constituted the sample of the research. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and Google forms, using the Personal Information Form and the Attitude Scale Towards Working Pregnant Women (ASTWP). Data analysis was done with mean, standard deviation, Kolmogorov-Smirnow test, independent intergroup t test, Analysis of Variance (F test), Pearson correlation analysis. P <0.05 was accepted as the significance level in the entire study. According to the research findings, it was determined that the participants' average CGAST score was 111.32 (±15.64) and was positively high. Gender is the only variable that causes a statistically significant difference in the ASTWP and all its sub-dimensions (p <.0001). While education level is the reason for a statistically significant difference (p <0.05) in the sub-dimensions of ASTWP and Prejudice towards Working Pregnant Women and Health and Leave Right of Working Pregnant Women among people with a master's degree, having only one child is the reason for a statistically significant difference in the sub-dimensions of ASTWP and Prejudice Towards Working Pregnant Women ( It was determined as p <0.05). As a result of the research, gender, educational status, having children, and working in the same unit for a long time were determined as variables affecting the attitude towards working pregnant women. It has been suggested that nurses, knowing the attitude of academicians towards working pregnant women, should contribute to social transformation by empowering both women and academicians. According to the research results, suggestions were made for nursing education, practice and research.
