Application of ELMERI® OHS observation method for quaries around Aksaray

In this study a proactive method ELMERI® OHS observation method was applied to six quarries around Aksaray in order to identify hazards that may arise from the production and processing of rocks and measures to be taken in terms of occupational health and safety (OHS). A new observation form is created by making several changes and adjustments to the existing form used for the manufacturing industry to include the observation areas of the quarry activities and operations. Visits were carried out at regular intervals for each quarry and three observations were made during these visits for each quarry using the modified forms. Identified OHS deficiencies were shown the company officials and they were informed about precautions to be taken towards minimizing the risks arising during operations. As a result of these studies, the overall situation in terms of OHS was demonstrated for the quarries. At the end of the study obtained ELMERI® scores were compared with the various operating parameters of the quarry and possible relationships between them were investigated. There were significant positive correlations between ELMERI® scores and the parameters showing the company size such as the number of employees, the number of daily production and the number of operating machines. A low relationship was seen between ELMERI® scores and the distance to the city center and the date of establishment.
