A study on Aksu magazine

Community centres have, within the history of the Turkish Republic, been important houses of public education. These institutions were established to economically, politically, socially and culturally educate Turkish society in the footsteps of Ataturk's principles. Community centre magazines have played a pinnacle role in this process of education. The Giresun Community Centres's Aksu (English, White Water) was one of many such magazines. Aksu's first publication was issued in September of 1933, its final publication in May of 1950. A total of some 59 (58, plus one new series) issues of the magazine were published. The magazine published the community centre's activities and articles spanning politics, history, economics, trade, agriculture, language, literature, art, and folklore, as well as speeches, conference material, literary works (poems, short stories, etc), and translations. This study takes an overall look at Aksu's published lifespan including its overall form, credentials, publishing politics, writers, and literary activities. A comprehensive bibliographic index of the magazine's writings was compiled. These writings were categorized by issue, author name, type, and subject. Aksu (at a glance) gave, as a local community centre magazine, importance to literary and cultural activities. Key Words: The Giresun Community Centre, Magazine, Literature
