Retrospective analysis of factors affetcting diagnosis and costs of acute stroke patients

Aim: Stroke is the most frequent seen patient group in neurologic patients. Diagnostic examination should be considered carefully, and treatment must be started quickly according to stroke type during evaluating stroke patients at emergency services. In this research, factors affecting to diagnosis, treatment, following procedure and costs of stroke patients applied to emergency service.Material and Methods: Research was retrospectively performed by examining of reachable files of 308 patients applied to Afyon Kocatepe University Hospital Emergency Service.In this research, age, gender, behaviors, stroke history, neurologic treatment findings, symptom durations, arriving state to emergency service, arriving hours to emergency service, examinations performed at emergency service, asked consultation numbers, asked consultation departments, services patients in, durations spent at emergency service, after staying examinations of EKO, Doppler USG and MRG, admiting duration, costs, mortality rates, discharged rates, rates of patients ignoring treatment and factors affecting to mortality between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes were compared.Findings: %1 of patients appied to emergency service were patients having stroke. %51,9 of patients were male and %48,1 were female. %63,6 of patients having stroke were at the age over 61, and %6,2 were youngers (under 40 age). The most frequent symptom applied to emergency service was weakening of muscles on one part at %31,1 rate. Using of ambulance rate was low with % 14,9 rate, and % 45,1 of patients had arrived to emergency service under 3 hours. GKS was between 14 and 15 for %84,1 of patients. According to TOAST classification, cardioembolic stroke was the most frequent stroke subtype. Mortality rate for stroke patients was found %9,4. It was found that platelet volume differences between patients were statistically insignificant. Average GKS and SPO2 were found statistically lower in hemorrhagic stroke group. In addition, cost and mortality rates also found statistically higher than other groups in hemorrhagic stroke group.
