The effects of carvacrol on the kidneys of carvacrol in the acute pancreatitis-induced rats

Abstract (EN)

Acute renal injury caused by acute pancreatitis is a common complication that is associated with a high rate of mortality. Carvacrol the main compound of thyme has anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of carvacrol on acute pancreatitis-induced kidney injury and to explain the underlying mechanism. With this aim, rats were randomized into control, acute pancreatitis and acute pancreatitis + carvacrol groups. The animals were given 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg carvacrol by intraperitonally injections after 50 μg/kg cerulein injection. After experimental procedures, kidney weight was determined. Kidney funtion was assessed and also renal tissues were removed for histological and biochemical investigations. According to investigation results, the activity of antioxidant enzymes as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in renal tissues of the acute pancreatitis+carvacrol groups was higher than that of the rats in the acute pancreatitis group. Moreover, the increasing doses of carvacrol significantly reduced pancreatitis-induced malondialdehyde (MDA) amount. With marked improvements in renal histoarchitecture, carvcrol treatment showed a duration and non dose-dependent positive effects. Also, there were significant differences between BUN, CRE and UA levels of rats with acute pancreatit before and after treatments. Besides, organ weights were significantly affected after exposure to cerulein. However, a significant decrease was established in the kidney weights of rats treated with the carvacrol as a compared with acute pancreatitis group. Taken together these data showed that 200 mg/kg carvacrol is an effective theraphy against acute pancreatitis-induced renal damages and dysfunction. As conclusion, the ameliorative effect of carvacrol was associated with its antioxidant properties. Thus, carvacrol was suggested as natural pharmaceutical agent against pancreatitis-induced multiple organ damages.
