Alaa al Aswany's the automobile club of egypt: A discourse analysis

This study aims to analyse Alaa Al Aswani's novel "The Automobile Club of Egypt" by using the method of discourse analysis to analyse the linguistic and rhetorical structure, social, and ideological contexts of the work. The novel presents a multi-layered narrative about Egyptian society in the 1940s, addressing themes such as colonialism, class distinctions, power relations, and individual resistance. The representations of different social classes in the work and how these representations contribute to the general discourse of the narrative are examined in detail. Within the scope of the study, the dominant discourses of the novel are identified using the method of discourse analysis, and their interactions within the narrative are analysed. The findings show that the linguistic structure of the work includes various strategies that reinforce or challenge social hierarchies and power dynamics. The novel particularly delves into the relationships between the aristocracy, the working class, and the colonial administration while revealing the resistance and adaptation processes of individuals through different characters. The work emphasises that the oppressive mechanisms of authority are maintained not only through physical violence but also through language and rhetoric. According to the analysis results, "The Automobile Club of Egypt" reflects the social injustices, class conflicts, and political manipulations in Egyptian society of the period through dramatic plot and character development. While the narrative of the novel reflects the dominant discourse in Egypt of the period, it also opens up space for alternative discourses of resistance. The study has demonstrated that language and narrative have the power to sustain or transform social structures. In addition, considering the historical context of the novel, it has been evaluated how the discourses in the narrative relate to the political and social movements experienced in Egypt in the 1940s. The novel has an important place in the social realist tradition of Egyptian literature by revealing the struggle of individuals with power, the ideological functions of language and rhetoric in society, and how they shape identity construction. This study aims to show how literary works function not only as artistic productions but also as tools of social transformation and criticism. This research, based on the discourse analysis of "The Automobile Club of Egypt," offers a new perspective in understanding the cultural and political structure of Egypt by shedding light on the dynamic relationships between literature, language, and society.
