Life and art of Ali Sami Boyar

The subject of this thesis is the life and art of Ali Sami Boyar. In the study, Boyar's life and understanding of art were examined and analyzes were made on his works. Boyar has specialized in different professions and branches such as painter, teacher, museum curator, educator, art writer, naval officer throughout his life. Boyar, who contributed greatly to the understanding of art and the works that emerged as a result of these different identities, to the modernization process during the 2nd Constitutional Monarchy and the Republic, carried out many activities in the field of culture and art. Boyar worked as a teacher, museum curator and manager in private and state institutions during the Ottoman and Republican periods. Among these institutions are Sanayi-i Nefise Mekteb-i Alisi, Heybeliada Naval School, Inas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi, Naval Museum, Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, Maritime Museum and Hagia Sophia Museum. Boyar studied painting at Sanayi-i Nefise Mekteb-i Alisi and Paris École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts. Returning to his homeland in 1914, the artist resigned from his duty as a captain in the army and continued the rest of his life as a museum curator, manager and painter. Boyar became one of the representatives of the 1914/Çallı Generation, which played an important role in Turkish painting. The artist also worked at Şişli Atelier, which produced works on war scenes and soldiers during the World War I. He designed the first postage stamps and paper money of the Republic of Türkiye and became a very important artist as the first person to apply the engraving technique, one of the new techniques of the period, in Türkiye. Boyar's works, who have produced works with different materials and techniques throughout his life, are included in different museums such as the Naval Museum, IRHM, Military Museum, IBB Library and Museums Directorate, as well as in domestic and foreign collections. In addition, the artist's two books named Hagia Sophia and Its History and Naval Museum Catalogue have been published
