Alcohol and substance addiction is increasingly one of the major health problems of our country. Alcohol and substance addiction affects not only addictors but also their family and society resulting in physical and psycohological problems besides legal and economical problems. Detection of addictors is not always possible on the other hand some common properties are reported. Childhood family and surrounding environment, roles in society at the past and during daily life, childhood trauma and coping methods and personality are important datas in determing these properties.51 alcohol and 31 substance addictors are compared with 40 nonaddictors according to sociodemographic, childhood trauma and overcoming methods and personality in this study. Sociodeographcic data forms, childhood trauma asking lists and overcoming scale scores and temperament, character envanters are performed to the attendings.Alcohol and substance addictors are predominantly male, avarage age was younger in substances addictors than alcohol addictors. Marriage statüs, education and economic status were higher in control groupe, lowest level was reported in substances adddictors, Smoking, alcohol and substance intake level were higher in substance addictors family whereas it was detected lowest in control group. While total score and whole subscores calculations were higher than control group, there was no significant difference within alcolol and substance addictor groupes according to childhood traumas. At the coping strategies substance group get lower scores than the alcohol group on focus on and venting of emotions, behavioral disengagement, restraint: and planning subscales and get highers scores on substance use subscales. However in alcohol group get significant higher scores on acceptance subscales then substance group. Also both alcohol and substance group get higher scores than control group on emotion focused strageies which is maladaptive. When we compare alcohol and substance addictor group with controls according to temperament and character envanters, novelty seeking and selfavoidance subgroup scores were higher but selfgovernment subscores were lower in alcohol and substance adddictor group. Additionally, reward dependence and cooperation scores were lower in substance addictors than controls.İn conclusion; daily living and social environment, family structures, chilhood traumas, attitude of coping and personality are affecting features in alcohol and substance addiction. Because substance addiction observed in younger patient and begins within shorter duration of time, risk factors should not be skipped. Beside medical treatment, psychothrepatic interventions for attitude of coping and changing personlity may possitively affect treatment process. Because, alcohol and substance addiction treatment is time consuming and difficult, protective psychiatric approaches are mandatory for prevention.
