The prevalance of cmv infection and the influence of CMV infection on clinical course on allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplanted patients

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) is a potentially curable therapeutic option for malignant and nonmalignant hematological diseases, otoimmune disorders, solid organ tumors and immunodeficiencies. Yet, AHSCT is associated with many early and late complications. Early complications develop within the first 100 days after AHSCT and include bone marrow suppression characterized by neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, veno-occlusive diseases (VOD), Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and fungal infections including Candida and Aspergillus. Late complications develop 100 days after AHSCT and include chronic GVHD, encapsulated bacterial infections, fungal infections, Varisella zoster virus (VZV) and late CMV infections. The most common cause of death after AHSCT is relapse. Oppurtunistic infections and GVHD are the most causes of transplant related mortality. In this patient population, not only necessary measures to prevent bacterial infections but also precautions against oppurtunistic infections, fungal and viral infectious agents must be undertaken to avoid morbidity and mortality. CMV infection after AHSCT still remains important despite the avaibility of precise diagnostic modalities and effective antiviral agents. Invasive fungal infection is an oppurtunistic infection, which is the other important cause of morbidity and mortality after AHSCT. This study aims to investigate the effect of CMV infection, IFI, acute and chronic GVHD on transplant outcomes in 165 patients, who underwent AHSCT at Istanbul University Istanbul Medical Faculty Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Unit.
