Retrospective investigation of non-infective complications in patients with allogenic stem cell transplantation

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate late non-infectious complications in patients with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHKHN). Material and Method: The records of 206 patients who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation between 01.02.2011 and 31.12.2018 in İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center Hematology Department were retrospectively reviewed. Results: When non-infectious complications were examined in 143 patients included in the study, 68% developed late complications. There was no difference between the rates of complications under 50 years and older. Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD) was observed in 33% of the patients. The most common skin and liver GVHD were found. Endocrine, hepatic, skin, ocular, oral, neurological, psychiatric and renal complications were analyzed by file scans. Although system complications were mostly related to GVHD and its treatment, complications related to the preparation regimen, treatments and primary disease were also observed. Among hepatic complications, GVHD and drug toxicity were the most common causes of elevated liver function tests (LFT). The most common endocrine complications were type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and thyroid dysfunction. Skin complications were mostly caused by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and Zona Zoster. Ocular and oral complications were mostly related to involvement or treatment of GVHD. Conclusion:: It was seen that late complications were common in patients who underwent allogeneic transplantation and these complications were mostly related to GVHD and GVHD treatment.
