Investigation of augmented reality applications in packaging designs: An application proposal for upcycling breakfast cereal packaging

Current changes in technology and innovative approaches have led to significant developments in the lives of individuals and societies. Augmented Reality technology, which is the combination of the virtual environment and the real world; It plays an effective role in fields such as education, military, entertainment, games, design, museums, exhibitions, health and advertising. This thesis study includes Augmented Reality applications used in packaging designs. In the study, a comprehensive literature review on Augmented Reality was conducted. Packaging design examples using Augmented Reality applications were examined. As a thesis project, "Junior Corn" brand breakfast cereal packaging, whose target audience is children, was designed. Again, within the scope of the thesis project, an Augmented Reality application that can be used in this packaging design has been produced. As the purpose of the application, Augmented Reality technology is aimed to provide children with both an educational and entertaining environment. At the same time, a sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging policy was emphasized. As a result of the application, it is aimed that empty cereal boxes can be reused with upcycling projects. The effectiveness of the Augmented Reality application designed as a thesis project was measured by user testing. Two questionnaires, before and after Augmented Reality experience, were applied to 20 primary school students in age groups. According to the data obtained, the answers given by the students to the questionnaire form and the expected answers were 90.5% consistent.
