The risk of developing pressure ulcers in patients who underwent surgery and nurses attitudes towards preventing pressure ulcers development

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the risk of pressure ulcer development in patients who underwent surgery and the attitudes of nurses to prevent pressure ulcer development. Material and Method: The study is cross-sectional. The population of the study consisted of the patients who had surgery in Fırat University Hospital within a year and the nurses working in the surgical clinics of this hospital. "Patient-nurse identification forms", "3S Intraoperative Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale (3S-RAS)" and "Attitudes Towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument Scale (ATPUPIS)" were used to collect data. Results: It was determined that the patients participating in the study got a total of 15.73±3.55 points from the 3S-RAS, and the risk of pressure ulcer development was low. Age, BMI, existing disease, additional chronic disease, duration of surgery and pressure ulcer development were found to be effective on the risk of developing PU. It was determined that the nurses participating in the study got a total of 42.98±9.21 points from ATPUPIS, and there was a significant difference between the variables of age, gender, marital status, working time and reflecting the knowledge gained in education to care. Conclusion: It was determined that the risk of pressure ulcer development in the patients participating in the study was low, and the attitudes of surgical nurses towards preventing pressure sores were positive.
