The effect of phubbing (using mobile phone in social settings) of the school principals of Anatolian High Schools and Vocational High Schools on teachers' motivation – Eskisehir province, Tepebasi district example

The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of phubbing behaviour of the school principals of Anatolian High Schools and Vocational High Schools on teachers' motivation. The target population of this relational screening modelled study consists of teachers working at Anatolian High Schools and Vocational High Schools, which are state schools, in the 2nd term of the 2022-2023 school year. The whole population was approached, 268 questionnaires were answered. At the data collection stage, Boss Phubbing Scale and Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale were used. At the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Cronbach's Alpha reliability analysis, one-way ANOVA, unpaired t test, Pearson correlation analysis and regression analysis were carried out. Analyses indicate that depending on the teachers' opinion, school principals show phubbing behaviour at a low level, school principals' boss-phubbing scores were differentiated in accordance with the work experience of teachers. It was found that the motivation levels of teachers based on Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale are high. It was also found that there is a significant and positive relationship between the phubbing behaviour of school principals and the extrinsicmotivation factor and amotivation factor of Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale. It was found that school principals' phubbing behaviour variable explains the extrinsicmotivation factor of Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale at the rate of 15,8% and amotivation factor of the same scale at the rate of 13,1%. Based on the data, it is strongly suggested that school principals should try to control and modify their phubbing behaviour.
