The acute effects of antagonist muscles stretching on anaerobic performances of agonist muscles

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of static stretching (SS) and dynamic stretching (DS) exercises applied to the antagonist muscles on the vertical jump (DS) height and 10-meter sprint (10-m ST) time, as well as to monitor progress after application immediately, at the fifth and tenth minutes of the experiment, respectively. Nine male elite level gymnasts (n = 9) voluntarily participated in this study. Participants had mean ages of 15.67 ± 1.50 years, mean heights of 161.78 ± 8.23 cm, mean body weights of 53.37 ± 11.09 kg, mean BMIs of 20.16 ± 2.67 kg/m2, and mean body fat percentages of 11.56 ± 4.58. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control (C), static stretching group (SSG), and dynamic stretching group (DSG). In this study, a crossover experimental design was used. Results of the statistical analysis showed no statistically significant differences in the 10-m ST time or DS height values between the trials [10-m ST; F(2, 24)= 0.492, p= 0.621, DS; F(2, 24)= 1.117, p= 0.351]. No statistically significant difference was observed in the trial, time or trial*time interaction for the 10-ST that's been acquired from repeated assessments [Trial: F(2, 24)=0.076, p=0.927; Time: F(2, 24)=2.164, p=0.119; Trial x Time: F(2, 24)=1.108, p=0.371] and DS height according to the findings of the two-way analysis of variance [Trial; F(2, 24)= 0.144, p= 0.867, Time; F(2, 24)= 1.244, p= 0.316, Trial x Time; F(2, 24)= 0.853, p=0.536]. It has been concluded that, anaerobic performance of agonist muscles are unaffected either positively or negatively by DS and SS protocols applied to antagonist muscles.
