The effect of lycopene on lung ischemia-reperfusion injury during total aortic occlusion

Abstract (EN)

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether I/R could have an important role on lung injury and to determine whether lycopene could have a preventive effect on this injury in the rat model of abdominal aorta cross clamping.MATERİAL and METHOD: Sprague Dawley rats (n=28) were randomly assigned to 4 groups as sham (grup 1), control (grup 2), low dose of lycopene (grup 3) and high dose lycopene (grup 4). Grup 1; All the rats in this group were fed orally with normal pellet mouse food for 10 days. Group 2; All the rats in this group were fed orally with normal pellet mouse food for 10 days, Grup 3; The rats in the third group were administered 1mg/kg/day of lycopene (Good?n Natural 10 mg capsule USA) with orogastric lavage. Group 4; The rats in the fourth group were administered 40 mg/kg/day of lycopene (Good?n Natural 10 mg capsule USA) with orogastric lavage. After the nutrition program for a period of 10 days in group 1 with appropriate anesthesia only the abdominal exploration has been made. Than blood and lung tissue samples were taken with sacrification of the rats. With appropriate anesthesia rats in groups 2, 3, and 4 the abdominal exploration has been made and than below the left renal artery the abdominal aortic total occlusion was achieved with cross clamp. After 45 minutes of clamping time 120 minutes reperfusion provided by declamping with the aorta. Than blood and lung tissue samples were taken with sacrificition of the rats.We measured the levels of SOD and GSH-Px in red blood cells, TNF-? and MDA in plazma, MDA, TNF-?, GSH-Px, SOD in lung tissue, MDA, GSH-Px, TNF-?, SOD in BAL fluid.CONCLUSION: Lung injury occurs after the surgery involving the temporary aortic cross clamping with subsequent ischemia/reperfusion of the lower extremities is an important cause of high mortality and morbidity rate in vascular surgery. The results of the study indicate that lycopene was decreased the lipid peroxidation rate and inflamatuary proces in serum and pulmonary tissue induced by I/R. Our study is a new and a different research by lycopene on I/R injury about the lungs. It would also be a guide to new studies.
