Apartmentalization process and new socialities in everyday life: the case of Antalya-Yenidoğan and Ahatli neighborhoods

Cities as living spaces and constructions built in accordance with the power, capacity, demands and needs of people create any kinds of economic, social and cultural changes and are influenced by those changes, as well. The spatial organization of cities have significant impacts on human beings' social relations, interactions, living styles and consumption patterns which are parts of their everyday lives. Space is fluid in this respect which is continuously changed and transformed into anything and prepare a potential for "new socialites" by including the social space within this dynamic process. The reproduction of space which is exemplified by urban transformation practices has appeared in the district of shanty houses. Shanty houses are in the process of construction of apartment houses. From this point of view, the aim of this study is to discuss the changes related to everyday life practices, social relations and consumption patterns of individuals who have experienced moving into apartment houses from shanty houses. Two neighborhoods named Yenidoğan and Ahatlı known as gecekondu districts (informal settlements) until recently in Antalya/Kepez are analyzed in this study. In-depth interviews are conducted with these neighborhood dwellers in order to understand their changing life styles, social relations and consumption patterns with construction of apartment houses.
