Turkey's security policy during the interim regime periods

Interim regime periods are periods in which the influence of the military in the administration is actually felt. In Turkey, the period from the coup d'état on 27 May 1960 until the establishment of the civilian government on 20 November 1961 is the first interim regime period. Secondly, the period from the memorandum given to the government by the military on 12 March 1971 until the establishment of the civilian government on 26 January 1974 is known as the second interim regime period. Finally, the period from the 12 September 1980 coup to the establishment of the civilian government on 13 December 1983 was considered as the third interim regime period. This study aims to analyse Turkey's security policies during the interim regime periods. Previous studies on the subject, government programmes and information obtained from press sources were used to examine the subject. In the specified periods, it was observed that Turkey, apart from anarchy and terrorist incidents, considered the spread of communism as an internal threat, the Soviet Union due to its support for the spread of communism and some territorial demands, and Greece as an external threat due to the Cyprus Issue and the disputes in the Aegean Sea, despite being a NATO ally. Again, at the end of this period, ASALA and PKK terrorism were developments that the country took into consideration in terms of security. Turkey's efforts to address these security situations were to adhere to international alliances and to improve the effectiveness of the Armed Forces.
