Legal literacy practices with argumentation based social science teaching: A mixed method research

Abstract (EN)

One of the skills that has become increasingly important in recent times is the legal literacy skill. As a matter of fact, it is observed that individuals with developed legal literacy skills are sensitive to the problems of society, constructive, creative and able to think critically. In this context, it is necessary to raise law-literate individuals in order to ensure social order and improve society. In order for this to happen, legal literacy trainings are required at all levels of education, starting from the primary school level. In this regard, primary school 4 in this research. At the class level argumentation-based designed on the basis of the process of teaching social studies literacy skills of elementary school students towards providing legal designed based on the feedback of the process and evaluation of the literacy skills of elementary school students to gain legal and social skills was to determine the impact on empathy. The research was conducted by mixed method. The participants of the study are a total of 40 fourth grade students in 2021-2022 academic year studying at Suleyman Shah Primary School located in the city center of Hatay in 22 experiments and 18 control groups. Five-week argumentation-based lesson plans were prepared and implemented by the researcher. In the lesson plan, it is stated that teachers and students will do about argumentation based teaching. The quantitative data of the study 'social skills rating scale" and "Empathy Scale for children and adolescents, qualitative data in the log, semi-structured interviews and lesson activities. As a result, it was understood that the courses processed with argumentation based teaching largely achieved the targeted gains at an adequate level.
