The literary adaptation of crime fiction genre in Argentina's and Turkey's cinema: The cases of The Secret in their Eyes and The Last Excavation

From the very beginning, the art of film-making has been influenced by all other forms of art in several degrees. One of these forms of art is literature. Many novels and stories have been adapted to cinema till today and so, literature has been used as an important source from the very beginning of the cinema. Literary adaptations were continued to be realized after the rules of storytelling in the cinema were generally accepted and the cinema has been involved into a big industry were money is almost a key object. It is a fact that the cinema was born after and by other arts. Arts like architecture, painting, theater and literature shaped the structure of film-making. So, it is fair to say that cinema still benefits from the literature. The similarities between the history of the republic of Argentina and the republic of Turkey had an impact on both literature adaptations. In The Secret in their Eyes and The Last Excavation, it is very possible to observe these similarities. This similarity also appears on adapted films: The Secret in their Eyes (2009) and Behzat C. I Burried you in my Heart (2011). These two novels are examined by using the term of cultural proximity to understand how similarities are reflected in the adapted films. In The Secret in their Eyes and The Last Excavation, Sachieri and Serbes are focused on the problems of hard-boiled crime thriller characters such as lack of communication, solitude, alienation and the psychological effects. Moreover, the novel proves to be a good case of both how cinema influences the novel and how a novel is transformed into a film. The interaction between the novel and the film, how the novel approximates the cinematic narrative, and the way the novel is transformed into a film are among the topics covered in this thesis. In this thesis, the theoretical framework proposed by narratology was used in order to analyze the techniques of narrative, the order of narrative, the speed of the narrative, the iterative in narrative, focalization, alteration of narrators both in the novel and the film. In this effect, Literary Reading Processes by Kıran's has been used as a key source. The subdivisions of the thesis ("Location", "Time", "Narratology" and "Characters") have been adapted from the same book. This thesis analyzes the construction of the script, which Sacheri and Serbes theirself helped to write, in order to explain a series of brilliant additions to the literary text that affect the structure of the story and character settings, contributing a great narrative coherence and consistency to the story told in the film. In this thesis it was concluded that the concerns of Sachieri and Serbes about the impacts of injustice in a society are preserved by the adaptations made by Campanella and Akar.
