Abstract (EN)
One of the most important knowledge that a self-aware person has throughout history is the phenomenon of death. We must have been aware of this death phenomenon since our hominid ancestors. It can be even observed today that the pack of the humanoid monkeys showing their respect to the member they have lost. In other words, people and their human ancestors have been aware of the concept of death, and the situation that they will face for thousands of years. This idea of vanishing from the earth made our primitive ancestors to have the impulse of making themselves immortal. Examples like; the murals from the Chauvet Cave in France, the objects that are found in Neanderthal graves, and the famous Great Pyramid of Egypt put in evidence the spiritual manifestation of this eternal impulse. The descendants of Indo-Europeans; The Greeks, who were spread around starting from the North Caucasus till the Balkans and to the entire Aegean Sea, developed a wide form of death cosmology and death ritual regarding the areas where they were settled and the culture of their ancestors. Heroizing the dead and making it immortal have been one of the most obvious post-mortem issues in the Greeks. In every period of the Ancient Greek culture, Athanatos, which is described as the concept of immortality had its high impact on every era. Homer's Iliad, is a work nothing more than a funerary monument dedicated to Achilles. In our study, we aim to find archaeological evidence in ancient texts in the periods of the Archaic and Classical of the Greek History and try to reveal how this concept was handled and what types of rituals have been developed. Key Words: Greek, Archaic, Classical, Death, Tomb
